Additional Information

In our family, we have a saying, “Everything is hard, until it’s easy.” This was something I picked up from a mentor of mine that used to tell me that any thing you start that you haven’t done before is hard until it becomes easy.

He explained that there are four distinct levels of learning competence.

The first is unconscious-competence (ignorance). This is when you don’t know that you don’t know. You have never done or heard about this before and until someone shows you or you read about how to do it, you don’t even know about it.

The second is conscious-incompetence (awareness). At this stage at least you know about what you didn’t know, but are still unable to do it. At least you know about it, but you have done it.

The third level of learning is conscious-competence (learning). This is where you are actively learning what you want to learn or someone is trying to teach you.

The last level or fourth level of learning or competence is unconscious-competence (mastery). This is where you have done it so many times that it has become easy.

A good example of these levels are when you first learned about shoe tying. Up until the point of when you first had to tie your shoes, you probably wore shoes that didn’t need tying (ignorance). Then you were introduced to tying shoes (awareness). Then you were taught how to tie your shoes, and you did it, but you struggled (learning). Finally, you have tied your shoes so many times that you can do it without thinking about it (mastery).
